Greetings in the name of Christ Jesus our Lord. I heard something recently that didn’t surprise me however, when it was said out loud it gave me great pause. In fact, I wondered if our District Superintendent, who shared this information, just got carried away with the information a little. When I arrived home after January Workshops I powered-up my trusty computer and surfed the Internet to see if he was on target. There it was, in black and white, from the L.A. Times: “Young people spend 7 hours, 38 minutes a day on TV, video games, computer…Media are a full-time job plus overtime for children 8 to 18, a Kaiser report says. They devote 53 hours a week to those pursuits, an hour and 17 minutes more than five years ago.” Hold on, there’s more from the same article: The numbers zoom even higher if you consider kids' multi-tasking -- such as listening to music while on the computer. Those data show young people are marinating in media for what amounts to 10 hours, 45 minutes a day -- an increase of almost 2.25 hours since 2004. My point in sharing this information is not to comment on over-indulgence or the diminishing art of actually talking with others, face to face, but to accentuate the next piece of information I will share with you. It has been said that the wheels of the Church turn, but they turn very slowly, and it is never more true than with the Roman Catholic Church due to its size and hierarchical governing body. This is why the next headline and article I read surprised me: Pope to priests: For God's sake, blog! We must respond to the challenge of ‘today’s cultural shifts,’ Benedict says. “In his message for the Roman Catholic Church's World Day of Communications, the pope, who is 82 and known not to love computers or the Internet, acknowledged priests must make the most of the "rich menu of options" offered by new technology. "Priests are thus challenged to proclaim the Gospel by employing the latest generation of audiovisual resources — images, videos, animated features, blogs, Web sites — which, alongside traditional means, can open up broad new vistas for dialogue, evangelization and catechesis,"he said. Why did our DS share the information with us about young people spending time with technology? Why have I shared with you information concerning the Pope instructing his priests to blog [blog: a Web site that contains an online personal journal with reflections, comments, and often hyperlinks provided by the writer; also: the contents of such a site]? It is because Methodists have always been a people who have adjusted our delivery of the Gospel so that we might be effective in sharing Christ with the world. We’ve have been doing pretty well as The United Methodist Church, but how have we been doing as Mebane United Methodist Church? Do you have any ideas about how we can better use technology to share God’s love with our community and our members? In the near future we will be addressing the need to upgrade our church website. Do you sense that God could use you to be a WebSteward for Mebane UMC? Our sound/technology team is working on how we use technology in our worship services. Any ideas…email them to me (bryan@mebaneumc.com), or text me (919-971-2960), or call me. If you want to sit face to face I’ll treat you to a cup of coffee. By the way, as I wrote this article, I used the Internet, checked my Blackberry as an email came through, watched TV, and sipped on coffee. The coffee was wonderful! Wednesday Morning Bible Study Group will begin again on January 6, Epiphany of the Lord, at 10:00 am. Last month we asked what the group would like to take on next and the consensus was to learn how to study the Bible. Well, Dr. Donald Griggs has just the books for us to use. We will spend seven weeks on the Old Testament and seven weeks on the New Testament as learn how to dig into the scripture. This will be a wonderful time of study and fellowship. If you are free from 10-11 am on Wednesdays, come on out and join us. By the way….bring your Bibles. ~Pastor Bryan --------------------------------- For more ideas please contact the Mebane Branch of Loaves and Fishes.
